I agree. Although, I am not a professional player, I would consider myself kinda/almost semi professional. I do play for money (online), and do turn a profit, and that funds certain other aspects of my life. However, it is a long way from becoming a percentage of my income.

The key to making backgammon pay for itself in the terms being discussed is to make some aspects free - such as watching big matches online, and for charging for other aspects that add value in other areas.

Something along the lines of paying to be a member of the ABT, USBGF etc. to enhance the services that are offered, however, making the high profile things available to all and any interested.

If you can spark someones interest in the game, by letting them watch the MC finals / Semis / Consos, then maybe they will take the next step and join a major BG federation, and that then funds other side events. Maybe members can download the matches electronically afterwards - license them to a federation or unit of some kind. Would I pay for those downloads - sure I would!

Perhaps a way to have more money coming in is to run some USBGF leagues / cups / tourneys both online and offline.

If you were to add a 3/5pt side event to each of the 3day ABT events that was for a USBGF cup or league, and have the rakes go straight to them, then that raises the profile accordingly.

Why doesnt someone make some videos on play techniques, make them available at a basic level for free, and make the full length ones available to paying subscribers.

I think there are countless ways to attract people, or rather make them interested.
