I think you're supposed to hit in these kinds of positions. Compare the situation when you hit and get hit back with the situation where you don't hit and Black escapes. In the latter situation you are pretty much totally hosed, whereas Black's 1-4 and 1-3 from the bar play very well for you since Black has to break the board, and even Black's 1-1, 1-2, and 1-5 still leave you better off than if Black escapes. The advantage of not hitting is that Black will be forced to crack with a bad roll, whereas Black will not collapse when on the bar. However, I think that preventing Black from immediately escaping with 6's is the top priority here.
