Backgammon just happens to have a culture where people expect to be able to win cash prizes and expect to pay into a prize pool in order to do that.

What if the World Championship tournament was played for the title and trophy only and there was zero prize pool. Would you be arguing that the registration fee should then be zero?

What does the amount someone is "gambling" have to do with the costs of running the event that the organizer has to recover from the players? Players are paying for a week of entertainment. When you go to a concert or a play because it is something you enjoy, do you believe that the more artistically talented attendees should pay more at the door? It is not a rake. It is an event admission ticket. Perhaps it might help to think of it that way.
