In Response To: "World Championship" -- Demographics (partial) and Ideas (Bill Riles)

I am one of the majority of backgammon players who will never attend a World Championship at MC. This is because I do not particularly want to visit MC (even though I am based in Europe) and I do not want to pay over Euro 1000 for a tournament to potentially get knocked out after one match (two consolations & a last chance are nice but I doubt they make up for losing to a fish)

I think a lot of Bill's ideas are very good and specifically:

Satellites - I would certainly play in satellites for the chance to play at the World Championship. Indeed I would probably play in several satellites on the basis that it only cost me (say) $50 per shot. If such tournaments were held online, they may even encourage me to play online more often.

Rotating venues - I would be more interested in attending if the World Championships were held somewhere like Tokyo or New York. At least when I got knocked out I would have the opportunity to see a great city.

First Round Pools - I would be far more interested in the tournament if I knew I would get several matches. I like the idea of pools or a swiss format, especially if there is a good chance of a game against a Giant.

I think one question has not been answered yet - how do you go about actually making these changes?
