What if the World Championship tournament was played for the title and trophy only and there was zero prize pool. Would you be arguing that the registration fee should then be zero?

I would like to see that.

If all entry fees are currently going for prizes and registration fees are for covering expenses, that means in "zero prize pool tournament" players would pay €240 in total for playing in MC - and that is more than 40% cheaper than today's beginners flight.

What does the amount someone is "gambling" have to do with the costs of running the event that the organizer has to recover from the players?

I mentioned that those who would pay lower registration fee wouldn't get (IMHO stupid) "special gala dinner & show with superstar".

And later I said that maybe even better idea is not to have "special gala dinner & show with superstar" at all, and by that reduce expenses for organizers.

This year $50,000 were gained with registration fees, and if one can't organize 200 people backgammon tournament for less than that, then he is doing something wrong.

I would like to repeat Casper's question: I have the feeling that organizing a 200 player chess event, a 200 player bridge event, or a 200 player draughts event cost a lot less than a 200 player backgammon event (looking at the total of registration fees and sponsor money). Do we know why?
