Ok, I guess I will pick here to jump in. The gala dinner was shit this year as far as food goes (one choice unless you are vegan, then one other choice)and the room was small. However (and this is a big however) I think it should exist and be mandatory. To get everyone together, even if it turns out that the tables pretty much fell along country lines (we had a strictly japanese, english, danish tables), is a pretty special thing. In the playing room, everyone is concentrating on their particular game and their particular friends. We are a community that thrives when we associate with one another. Our table had israelis, americans, germans, and an adopted englishman (if I left anyone out sorry).
This is a social game, but we have some of the most awkwardly social people out there (I would name names, but you know who you are). People need to come a bit out of their comfort zone and that to me makes some of the best experiences. I wasn't planning to go to the Swedish open, but now I am seriously considering it. Why? One, Konrad Froschl was on me like a bad habit to go and he is a very nice guy I have met at many tournaments. Two, haven't been to Sweden in 10 years. 3. A lot of my Danish and Norwegian friends will also attend. We all agree the economy is shit everywhere, and you need reasons to spend money. For me, seeing friends and knowing I will have a good time make up for that.
I don't think the fees should go up; I think set at 1000 euros for the world championship is a good price. Nice round number, blah blah blah. There have to be satellites. Period. It seems like the same re-hashed website and program every year, with attendance dropping. Get some people in for a 10 euro or even 50/100 euro qualifier. That needs to happen fast. There needs to be a build up to this thing.
Federations need to be involved. We had an amazing number of Italians this year; a huge reason why is Fernando and the clubs kind of got together and made a showing. The Danes, Americans, and English were an afterthought this year. Like they did at the Nordic, team event. This time, every country fields their own team. I know then there are issues with multiple teams from one country, but maybe each team has the right to challenge the other teams so there is only one country team. 5 man teams, 1000 euro each (can be sponsored or paid by individuals) whatever. Get the countries behind the teams!
What else? I don't know. Professionals running the sheets and draw of course. The Danes were great at that, Mike Main and I had a bit of an issue (still love him but not starting a match at 4.30 am no matter how nice he asks). Clocks need a role when people are playing too slow, period. There are a variety of other things (seeding, which I am against for example) but I think this is where I would start for this. And for God's sake more than one mic. The Falafel show is much more interesting when he has someone giving him shit during his commentary. Mochy wasn't able to get a word in edgewise, and MCG just sat and giggled (you did put in a few points Matt, but someone needed to call Falafel out more when he blew the play). I would suggest Falafel, someone funny, and MCG. MCG would have the computer and give hints to the color guy (sports broadcaster term for you europeans thinking I am being a racist). It is an exciting game, and people would get a kick out of watching it, but a little more there (and improve the video of course). Ok, now I will shut up. Until the responses. =-)
