Making 10 pt does two things: 1) It safeties one of the blots. 2)It creates a landing spot for your checkers on the mid point. Making 5 pt does one thing : It makes your best point and puts more pressure on your opponent's rear checker.Two good things are often better than one. You have a solid edge in the position, so let your opponent to take chances and to try to change things around. After making the 10 point he may be forced to attack your remaining checker, but he is outboarded at the moment, so you rate to benefit from exchange of hits. If you make the 5 pt instead, your opponent may double hit your blots, and if you dont hit back from the bar he will have some real counterplay.
