I don't think the players should ever be allowed to change the length of a match. It can be unfair to the players down the road. In this case, I doubt it would matter much as Paul's winning chances were so low anyway. But, for the player that would face the winner, having a 3.2 percent chance at a near bye is still better than a 3 percent chance.
