I think safe is best as you then may get small rolls and point safely on his two point (or his ace point if he moves up), or luckbox with doubles to get off the midpoint safely. And if you roll an uncomfortable roll that forces you off the mid you are just as likely to then hit loose, but in the meantime, you've given yourself a chance to avoid it, and your opponent may be forced to weaken his structure as well.
