If the rest of the tournament is clocked, so should the final be clocked. For one thing, this policy better enables apples-to-apples error rate comparisons assuming a lot of the late matches are recorded. It also makes the game more exciting for spectators to watch--unless they prefer turtle races to the Indy 500. And anyway, if time management was one of the components of backgammon skill the tourney included at the start, why suspend it at the end?

Regarding Jason Lee's comment: This is easy to test. As the opposing team is winding down their discussion of 5-2, ask them, "Have you thought about what you'll do with a 2-5?"
