Agreed.

Call intermediate 'advanced'. (Many tourneys do already). Let it remain unclocked. Anybody who wants to play in the advanced can, including perhaps former Open players who may have slowed a bit as they get older. (We should all be so lucky to reach 80). No questions asked.

There are already plenty of players perfectly capable of being competitive at the Open level who remain in Advanced for reasons having nothing to do with age.

The large majority of Open players will not be in the least bit enticed to drop to Advanced in order to fish for extra equity, simply for ego reasons, as winning the Advanced will never have the cachet of winning the Open level.
