I guess I should clarify. Viewing a person's hole cards makes poker pretty trivial for the casual viewer. The casual observer would have no idea what's going on in a chess game. Though I don't see why that should affect how many people can learn the game.

And the level of study and understanding required to become even reasonably proficient at chess is much higher than it is for poker.

This part is a bit strange. More likely that the perception of differences in skill in poker is obscured by the element of chance.
