When White slots on the opening roll with 21, 41 or 51, he will lose more gammons than if he had split. However, when Black has his 3pt, splitting becomes more dangerous (because Black's board is now stronger) and slotting becomes more attractive.
If Black's inner point is stronger (the 4pt or 5pt), then slotting is riskier than when Black owns his 3pt.
