I would not have played this correctly OTB. Here is my computer aided analysis.

Player 2's plan is to race. Ideally, he would like to disengage. Player 1's plan is to hit a checker and then contain it. Player 2 may further his plan by hitting and keeping Player 1 busy while coming home. But, hitting is incidental to the overall plan. In general, when following a plan of hitting a checker, it is best to stay back.

Shots after the two plays are close, 14 to 10. They are even closer when we consider that hitting with 21 & 33 aren't that great. The smaller number of shots doesn't yield much for the 20-16 play.

The big swing comes when there is no hit and Player 1 profits from keeping a checker back on the five point. Look at each position after 42, 62, 64 & 65. All of these play far better with a checker on the 20 point.
