NY Update?

In the meantime, Neil, while they had 20 in NY, you and I and MCG and Howard and others were amongst the 22 players at the Saturday tournament in Carol Stream IL!!!!
I think that says a lot for the perceived risk/reward and draw of major tournaments vs. cheaper, easier, local 1-day tournaments.
Until and unless we get a lot more new blood and sponsors, maybe we should have a lot of national, regional tournaments, just like the ACBL, where people can travel shorter distances, pay a lot less money, and play in a one day event, and all of these add up to national points and rankings in addition to the "major" events, or "regional" events?
This would allow for much greater participation and more people winning and more people playing and competing. Maybe someday that is what the ABT, or some other organization will become (all sanctioned by the USBGF of course, as that is the association of and by the players, themselves).
If we could get 22 people in Carol Stream, I bet if there were similar events in 9 other cities around the country on the same day, and points went towrad a national title or ranking, we could have easily had 600 or more people playing live, tournament backgammon on that day, instead of 20 or 40.
