I now have an iPhone that is usually sufficient to help with navigation. I actually have a very good sense of direction and rarely need it. But there are those times it helps for sure.
However, those who were present at the first US Open in the Washington DC area (actually in Arlington, Virginia) may recall my story about how I wandered the roads of the area for about 1 hour while actually seeing the hotel location on my iPhone the entire time.
It seems that the roads of Arlington, VA were planned out by a sadist. Once I missed the exit that were on my printed directions (it seems my eyes are not what they used to be), it was literally a series of "you can't get there from here" experiences. I found myself circling the area multiple times, making a pass through the terminals at the airport, past the Pentagon, into Arlington Cemetery, back across the river into DC and past the Lincoln Memorial, etc. No question I got good tourist value out of that trip that I would not have otherwise gotten, but by the time I arrived barely on time to play my Master's match, I was totally fried.
Did the iPhone navigation help? Yes, it was essential. I honestly believe that without it, I would still be circling the roads of Arlington today, endlessly trapped in the gravity of the black hole that surely exists there.
