You could also say that there's a luck factor involved when the chess tournament drawsheet is made. You might lose to a Karpov type in the first round, or instead end up in an easy bracket and play palookas all the way to the final, where you beat a master with a cheap trap like the one Xavier describes.

I was lucky in the high school competitions, because everybody was a Bobby Fischer fan (myself included) and so we played and analyzed king pawn openings. If I had been unlucky enough to have to play Black vs. an opponent who was booked on queen pawn openings, and who that day chose to start with d4, I'm sure I would have lost ignominiously. But nobody did.
