In Response To: Insightful comment about luck versus skill (Steve Mellen)

My point is only that the person who has the higher level of skill doesn't always win. The opponent can have a lucky day, the referee or umpire can make a mistake, the skilled person can have a temporary mental lapse or physical glitch.

The skilled shooter might have one defective bullet or he involuntarily burps while squeezing the trigger -- bad luck. The 100% perfect blackjack player might go broke in the short run (statistically possible) -- bad luck (or was the dealer cheating? also bad luck). The most skilled checker player in the world, who has won every game for the past 20 years, hits the clock after a move but doesn't hit it hard enough (or the clock malfunctions). The unsportsmanlike opponent says nothing as time runs out. The referee rules against the most skilled player -- bad luck.
