I kind of agree with you. I think "luck" relates to favorable events happening outside of your control, skill to favorable events happening under your control. Now if I play draughts and win, it means that my opponent has screwed up his equal position sufficiently for me to win. I cannot control his (or her) moves, so these screw-up moves are my luck. Capitalizing on them requires skill.

If I lose, it means that I have screwed up my own position sufficiently to lose. I have full control over my own moves. So no bad luck involved, only lack of skill.

In the "trap" example, I think it depends on your perspective - falling in the trap is lack of skill; having you opponent fall in the trap is luck (and the more skillful your opponent, the less likely that you will get this lucky).
