Rollout: Bearing in with no contact

Congratulations to Mochy, who got this one right.
In general it's bad to have a big stack on the 6 point with fewer checkers on the 5 point and/or 4 point than on lower points. Thus 6/5 is clear for the ace. Then at first glance, 10/6 seems obvious for the 4. But why does it seem obvious? It shouldn't, because it stacks up on the 6 point when the 5 point and 4 point don't have many checkers on them.
But you may say, if I don't bear in the checker on the 10 point then I might not even get to bear off a checker next turn if I roll 31 or 21 or 11! However, those rolls are bad rolls in any case, and after 7/3, 21 and 11 can be productively played to smooth your distribution by moving a checker from the 6 point to the 4 point. On the flip side of the coin, playing 10/6 means that if you roll two large numbers, they will tend to play worse than after 7/3.
The other objection to 7/3 is that it buries a checker deep. This is certainly a concern, and if the roll had been 51 instead of 41 then 6/5 7/2 would be a big mistake. (But note that with 51, the best play is not 10/5 7/6 but is instead 10/5 6/5!) However, the 3 point is not quite deep enough to outweigh the advantages of 7/3.

Here's another example, from the roll immediately preceding the above one. As you can see, I misplayed this one too. It's much better to shore up the 4 point than to stack up on the 6 point.

One final example from our chouette, so that MCG doesn't complain again about the lack of content of my posts. This time I got it right OTB. I was captain, and my team members wanted to bear one, but I overruled them because it seemed likely that bearing one now would likely lead to missing twice with 4's (or even 1's) later on.
