Can't say I know what's right, but my first choice is to kill fives with 6/5 6/4 9/8.

No idea what you may have played that was 8th best. A few plays look reasonable -- 6/5 6/4 9/8 and 6/4 5/4 9/8 and 9/6 5/4 -- but I can't find eight contenders.
