Hi Timothy..
Often when I play, I play with the tutor mode on to do my best to learn. When I saw this position I immediately played to make my board, 9-6 5-4. After I did this GNU gave me a thumbs down, so I started to look at the position closer.
Although I am ahead in the race, the only way I will stay ahead is to escape without being hit, and soon before my board starts to crunch, wasting PIP’s. Looking at the position, there are no rolls GNU could have which leave me a shot next turn, and only double 3,4,5 and 6’s which would give me a chance to escape. I thought that if I was forced to escape with a 6 and leave a blot I would have a good chance of losing the game. Thus I chose the move 6-4, 5-4 and 9-8 preserving a 6 in case I needed it. GNU thought it was somewhat reasonable and I played on. After the game when I was looking at the moves, I saw that that particular move was 9th, and most of the other moves were ones I would not have played. But the lesson was learned.
So I guess title should have said “ I get the concept” of not filling your board and staying back for the shot or chance to run. I still don’t understand why any play moving checkers from the 3 or 2 point are better, so I posted the question in the hopes that one of the many WC players on this form would make this type of move and enlighten me. All of the responses were similar to the move I ultimately made, and their explanations were better than I could have come up with, so I am assuming that they know much better than GNU, and that GNU was wrong.
