I think the key to this play is that it semi-freezes your opponent's back checker so that you can prepare to attack next turn while keeping the 4-5-6-8 front structure. This gives you a tempo to move from the back anchor, make the best 4-point board, etc while keeping a balanced position.

Whereas if you switch, you are unhappy after any entry.
