Ah right, silly me! I didn't think about the 1994 date even as I wrote it. You would have to have done the Snowie-3 trunc several years, if not a decade, after you wrote the article.

Paul Magriel was a big advocate of manual rollouts (before computer rollouts existed). As you imply, seeing how the games develop is a lot more educational than just looking at the bottom line -- it's a kind of partial compensation. Magriel (and others, including me) also implemented a form of variance reduction, settling bearoffs that could be solved by brute force or prop-related positions where value had become "known."

Anyway, it's impressive what you were able to discover and communicate to others about the first few rolls of the game back in the Mesozoic Era.
