I'm not sure why you're trying to find clever shortcuts for a slow method.

Well, that's easily answered. I got my mind hung up on the super brute force method, and the generating function solution didn't come to mind. When you posted it, I had one of those "duh" moments -- why didn't it occur to me before? But I still wanted to think about it the original way that came to mind -- no good reason. I do quite agree that everything you've posted about the problem is FAR more efficient and elegant.
