I almost passed this thread by, but "Third Roll Position" caught my eye.
41S-42P-32
I can't remember if I've looked at this position before or not (I have no rollout for it), but it's usually wrong to add a fourth blot against a two-point board. 24/22 9/6 leaves one fewer blot, but that goes too far to the other extreme. And keeping the same number of blots with 13/11 9/6 is worse distributionally in direct comparison to 13/8.
23/18 keeps the same number of blots but it leaves a direct shot for White's six-checker midpoint so that's out. What remains seems to be two-up (24/22 23/20) and 13/8. I feel sorry for secondary 8pt spares, which are so frequently underestimated, so I'll go with 13/8, though between that and the two-up play I can't say that I have a clear preference.
Because the 2s, 3s and 4s don't work together and the only point that could otherwise be made has been blocked, 41S-42P-32 reminds me of, but is more interesting (less clear) than, 21S-31P-43, 21S-11e-43 and 21S-11f-43 (where e = 24/22 6/5(2), and f = 24/23 6/5(3)).
However, a similar third roll position that I find even more interesting is 41S-22E-32, diagrammed below. Any thoughts?
