No one has the exact numbers, but I venture to say that dozens have been reported and proven to be cheaters on various servers, and as you know, we've caught a couple in the past who have been proven, beyond reasonable doubt, to be cheating in our on-line chouettes and money games in the past....HY and PB are the most famous cases.
I have recorded many matches on Play65 with people who have played under 1.5. My guess is the only reason they were that high is that they were cheating at an inferior level to the level I used for analysis, which is probably also true for many that I have seen playing under 3.0.
I used to think it was easy to spot cheaters simply because they must play too slow, but I have seen demonstrations of how you can cheat with the bot with virtually no delay that could be recognized. Further, how are you ever going to be able to catch a "smart cheater"--one who only cheats on the very important cube and checker decisions and plays normally on the rest of the plays, or even makes an intentionally small mistake or two so that his PR rating is higher?
That's an interesting thought...perhaps whenever Neil or one of the other Giants makes an error in an on line match it's just to prove to everyone he's not cheating. The problem, of course is, that these players have many live recorded matches where they play at under 3.0 and we know they are that good...and that's another argument for recording live matches.
