^ is "fan"

< is "enter one" (when more than one checker is on the roof)

> is "enter both/all"

Memory aids:

^ is fan because it points to the roof, where the checker(s) stay.
< is less than, as in entering less/fewer than 1.5 checkers.
> is more than, as in entering more than 1.5 checkers.

When a move is forced, any character (or even omitting a character) will do, theoretically, but I find that use of the caret and angle bracket characters makes the sequence friendlier -- easier to follow.

These symbols are intended to describe purely the nature of entering/fanning. When only one checker is on the roof and it enters, I don't use an angle-bracket. For example, 54S-21H-31U (not 31>); only part of the roll was actually used to enter. 52S-55A-52> or 52S-55A-53< or 52S-55A-63^ is appropriate.

If you think it unlikely your readers will care which fanning number was rolled, then instead of 63^ (or whatever) you can omit the roll and use "F" or "Fan" or "fan."
