Compare this position to playing 11 from the opening position, where N (Near 8-7(2), 6-5(2)) would be clear if 11 was a legal opening throw. From the opening position, N changes 65 and 66 from strong rolls to much weaker rolls since all moves must be made from the midpoint and eight point. After 63R, 65 and 66 play reasonably well since the running checker can be used for one of the large numbers. Also, the running checker will often enter the home outfield next turn. e (each 24-22, 6-5(2)) anticipates this creating a double indirect shot when a blot is left there.

Note also that N fails to block 63 linking the two back checkers. After 64R, N blocks the linking 64 and is one of the reasons that N is the preferred response in this instance.

I find 11 absolutely fascinating in the opening. If someone wrote a book on this subject, I would be first in line to buy it.
