Here's another way to look at it. Let's say I was a nice guy and found a sponsor to put up $20,000 to give to the winner of a competition between the best players in the world. And let's say we decided to have a 1 day event to do this.

And let's say I decided it would be fun to have a tournament and invite the top 8 Giants to compete.

And let's say I decided to do this on Sunday, December 15th and the format would be a round-robin tournament, 7 point matches, and the player with the best w/l record would play in the finals with the player who had the lowest PR, and they would play 2 out of three matches to 5.

Let's not get too hung up on the format....just picture some kind of event, maybe modified Swiss, where there are several matches that can be played in a day to get down to two finalists.

At the end of the day, of course, the winner might not truly be the best player in the world, as the best player in the world might not even be one of the top 8 current Giants. But it would be an exciting tournament to hold and watch.

But I doubt you could get all 8 of them in one place for a day, even with a $20,000 prize and an impressive title, and you certainly wouldn't get that big a crowd to come watch.

But you could have all 8 competing on the internet, with a crowd watching each of them, including a proctor, and it would be certain that there would be no cheating, and every match could be easily recorded and watched over the internet by players all over the world. The finals could be the next day and possibly watched by the largest crowd ever to watch a backgammon match....or possibly the two finalists square off in a live match that is podcast at a convenient location a week or so later.

Now, I'm not saying this should replace the World Championship live tournament...I'm just saying this would be a fair and honest and interesting competition watched by all with recorded matches that can be reviewed and analyzed for years and it would be a competition that would be quite meaningful and impressive to win. And it would be something I would be excited to watch...by the way, maybe you charge $10 to be able to watch the event on your computer and another $10 to have access to download all the matches and that might provide enough prize money right there to fund the event. If, like poker, there was enough sponsorship and money, certainly you induce these top 8 players to get together live, but until that time, there in no reason not to use the internet.

I see no reason why something like this can't be in the near future of backgammon.
