Hi Gregg,
I consider you my first backgammon teacher, since you answered many of my questions at Snowie's forum and referred me to GammonOnline. Of course, you are right. For instance, winning at 3 away - 7 away or greater, one should not recube during a race unless one has a 90% winning chances.
However, one of my other favorite teachers Chuck Bower has taught us how to use the 8912 and Ward method to deal with specific double points at various match percentages. http://www.bkgm.com/rgb/rgb.cgi?view+500
Chuck explains that one can use the formulas 54 + 2 x Pip Count or 74 + 2 x Ward Count Percentage to estimate winning chances.
My response was more appropriate for explaining a general approach to race cubing. It is not as applicable to the post problem because it does not emphasize the 33% take point. Also, this is one of those problems where the 74 + 2 x Ward formula does not work. I was simply thanking Tom and Chuck who taught me how to apply the pip count, ward count, 2 pip penalty per cross over, and above formulas for race cube decisions. Also, it was provided to others who may not be as familiar with these techniques.
Stanley
