I don't know the correct explanation in Stick's case in particular, but as a general rule, if you know your opponent well then you can perform better by exploiting his or her weaknesses. We frequently see discussion here on bgonline about making deliberate cube "errors" because of the expectation that the opponent will make mistakes to compensate.

You seem to think that we should expect PR to correlate very well with Elo, whereas my expectation is exactly the opposite. I see no reason a priori to think that they would correlate very strongly and what I find surprising is that they seem to correlate as well as they do.
