Have you ever gone to the movies, or a show, or a sports event for enjoyment? Do you ever complain about the rake when you did that? A backgammon tournament is a weekend of entertainment, not a lottery. Stop looking at it as a rake and start looking at it as the price of admission to the event. It is a tremendous value for novices for what they get, and is nothing compared with the cost of hotels, airfare and other expenses.
