The tradition of this event has always been that you can still win with two losses and you are still playing with three losses until you cash. The current setup preserves this tradition.

Ok, but why do you (all) think this is a better format than simply ending the tournament after say, 9, 10 or 11 rounds?

I wonder, also, whether the playability (re schedule/time etc.) of the Madison format implicitly assumes a certain level of attendance? Would it work if there were 64 players? 128?
