In Response To: Meyer Dice Tube (revisited) (Rich Munitz)

I thought that a bit of a humorous moment -- and it was my own personal clock receiving the abuse.

I will admit to quite the firm rap of the clock plunger after the reported horrific sequence -- not just any old every day, random, common, horrific sequence but one with the added timeliness of deciding the finals match at DMP.

I will confirm the dice tube jumped on the table -- from a position just beyond the left end of the board -- and the end cap came off. The impetus for the movement, obviously, came from the rapping of the clock plunger.

I will contend -- as one who possesses multiple engineering degrees -- the end caps of the dice cube are either extremely loosely fitted or that the end cap which dislodged was not properly installed/seated at the time -- though we had played quite a long match with the dice tube.

I will offer the following supporting observations. The plastic GameTimer II clock was perched on the checker rack on the right end (from my perspective) of my Taki board. I noted the end of my turn by depressing the clock plunger with a firm rap. However, the plastic clock and the plastic plunger were in no way damaged -- and continued to function. The clock did not move from the board. The board did not move, nor was it damaged. The checkers on the board were not disturbed. There was no perceptible movement of the table.

Thus, I can only conclude a freak transmission of an impulse which disturbed an end cap which was extemely loosely attached to the tube -- be it by design, by improper installation, or by having worked loose through repeated usage during a very long match. Otherwise, I would expect the clock to have been damaged or the checkers to have been disturbed.
