ABT Points

Hmmmm. About five years ago, I registered and paid to play in the Chicago Opens tournament, four weeks in advance. I was told that the Opens tourney was fulled. The next year, I registered and paid, six weeks in advance. Again, the tourney was full. It was suggested that I play in the Advance division. I rather lose in the first round of the Open division than win the Advance division. Of course, I refused the option of playing in the advance and received a refund. I did enjoy the 5 point blitz tourney and meeting backgammon friends.
I never went to a Poker tournament. I know that they are quite popular. Do poker tourneys have different brackets for expert, advance, and intermediate players? Or can anybody play in any poker tourney? It seem to me that if you could not play in your tourney of choice, then there was no backgammon action for you. If you lost quickly in your tourney of choice, there was no backgammon action for you. Limited action concerned me, except for the 5 point blitz tourneys which provided consistent play.
I saw the possibility of more backgammon action without the brackets. However, this must be what most backgammon players like because this is how backgammon tourneys have been organized. Perhaps, these different brackets are encouraging learning players to continue with backgammon. Limited action caused me to have little interest in the ABT tourney in my area.
