I agree with Casper. It is not so much the desirability of slotting as it is the undesirability of splitting when facing eleven checkers in the zone and down 16 pips (and the neither-fish-nor-fowl third option of 13/10 leaves 6 shots anyway). I think slotting is right by a mile.

Moving White's spare from her 6pt back to her midpoint (52D-55P-42P-31P-21) typically makes a huge difference; then the slot vs split decision is less clear.

In my Nordic Open seminar of 2003, one of the positions I posed to the audience was 43D-55P-11, shown below (and worthy of posting again even if I've done so before). Black is facing one fewer checker in the zone and he is down 3 fewer pips compared to the position above.

The best play is 8/7(2) 6/5(2) and close second is 10/9 6/5(3) even though 6/5 weakens the inside spare. Most people (by show of hands) played 24/23 10/9 6/5(2), which is fourth best and a borderline blunder (behind third-best 11/9 8/7 6/5(2)). In the subject position, I would think splitting is at least that wrong.
