If you really feel that getting free time to calculate the gammon price is a huge advantage, think of it as part of the penalty for making an illegal move. The alternative is that the penalty for an illegal move becomes something of a mixed blessing (you get an option... but your time runs down while you think about it), which is not really consistent with the spirit of assessing a penalty.
