The legal play agreement has some downsides IMNSHO:

- Apart from at the Nordic Open "legal plays" has been a gentleman agreement between some players with the result that not all play by the same rules. This downside can be corrected by revising the official rules.

- More importantly I see an inherent problem with the rule: As I understand the legal play agreement both players agree to only make legal plays. If any player accidently makes an illegal play, the opponent has an obligation to correct the play. Let's assume that player A makes an illegal play that is to the clear advantage of player B. Somehow player B doesn't notice the illegal play and proceeds with his own play. The kibitzers notice the illegal play and after the match player B is blamed for not correcting the play when the kibitzers learn that the players were using legal plays. The result is that player A makes an error but player B takes the blame. Hypothetical? yes. Could it happen? definetely!

If you don't like the above scenario, then just change the story so that player A notices his error himself after player B has made his play. Player A blames player B when in fact it was player A who committed the error. I don't like this aspect of the rule one bit.

I prefer the current rules and only like to play legal moves when the match is recorded.
