It is possible to run a viable Non-Money / Optional-Money play annual event:
Backgammon Live in London 2001-2009:
Year Attendance
2001 30
2002 40
2003 70
2004 75
2005 70
2006 115
2007 111
2008 107
2009 101
It is the very fact that players can come along and NOT play for money that is this events attraction to them. Many that have come would have otherwise shyed away from attending a live event. Some of those that have come have gone on (some very successfully) to play in Money-Play events, others are happy to just attend this event. Hence the event serves, in some cases, as a feeder event to bring new players to live play without frightening them off at their first attempt.
Players that do attend Bg Live in London events do pay a registration fee. Is it by chance that they generally do not moan about this? I think not. They accept it as the cost of doing something they would like to be doing on a weekend.
