I have been chewed out for letting someone take back an illegal move that was to his detriment on the grounds that I hurt my auction buyers as well as myself. I think that argument is spurious, but why should I have to listen to it?

Now that you're publicly (albeit asterisk-ily) enrolled in the LMC, then potential buyers know that you're bleeding away gobs of equity by correcting your opponent's illegal moves, and should bid accordingly.
