Eliminate entry fees to promote backgammon?

Not really. My point is that 10% is the 'correct' rake from a gambling point of view. Given that the backgammon tournament population is currently a bit small it might be better to cut down on fancy locations and extras until we have big enough fields to make it economically viable.
