What the Dayton Guy Said

I think the Dayton example proves a point....no fees or low fees are about the same. The point of this thread is that there is a big difference between a high entry fee and a low or no fee. If ABT tournaments had entry fees of only $25 for the intermediate and novice divisions (but they had to also pay an annual membership fee to the USBGF of $40, one time), I truly believe that would attract a lot more players than we are not getting for those events.
That lower fee would NOT cost the tournament directors at all, as they would keep the entire fee and not offer cash prizes in those divisions, but only trophies and some hospitality. In fact, the directors might even come out ahead that way.
I think the idea is that money play should be left to the Open division (professional division, if you will) and let everyone else play for rating points, trophies, and titles.
In time, as a result, I believe the game will see much more growth.
Now, for a "transitionary period of time," those intermediate players who like playing for prize money can certainly be offered a side pool option if they want it, and that can give them a chance at winning some bucks. And it could even be a multiple side pool with $50 increments so people can gamble as much as they want.
They could also be offered a "blind pari-mutuel" like the one I ran in Florida, which went smoothly, quickly, was fun, and gave everyone who wanted to a chance to do a little more gambling. And because I ran this SEPARATELY from the tournament there was no "official" gambling by the tournament director or staff (I did split the proceeds with Chiva except for an extra 50 cents which I pocketed and he still doesn't know about.)
