It's basically the only term still if you want the in the know people (that would be 16 year olds :) to not think you're a loonie. Like I said, to be sure I asked my two geekiest online friends:
"Would you ever say thumb drive?"
Their response: "Rofl..no, y?"
It's the *Rofl* that should catch your attention, it's exactly what I thought when I saw 'thumb drive', it's something you wouldn't say ... like calling someone 'gay' and meaning 'happy'. You know I'm looking out for you best interests Chuck.

Other terms you can get away with are probably 'jump stick' and 'usb drive'. *Pen drive* is another gay term. All different ways to say the same thing, the people in marketing are probably sitting around a desk "What can we call it to make it sound small!?"
