Clocks and Penalties

I mentioned pip counting specifically because a) it is such a mechanical activity requiring only simple addition and multiplication b) it usually takes well over 12 seconds (for me anyway) and c) is likely to be improved upon by not rushing. True, I could shave some time off by practicing more. But do we really want to amplify the importance of this skill - as clocks do – over other backgammon skills such as the ones you mention. Seeing the relevant features of a position, figuring out how to adjust from a reference position to an actual position, doing a one play scan seeing how an opponent's rolls will play, thinking through how the volatility of a given position affects the cube actions – all require actual backgammon knowledge and skill - and are much less likely to be improved upon much by taking a lot more time (although that doesn’t stop some people from trying).
