Clocks and Penalties

I get the feeling many of the strong clock advocates, while initially interested in having the event run smoothly, are now interested in gaining or keeping a competitive advantage.
Ok, that's not an unreasonable, on the face of it, hypothesis. But thinking about it I don't think it holds water. I find that a strong player not on a clock is generally an even slower player than an most intermediate players are. This is because the strong player knows all sort of calculations that could be done and, given the time in which to do so, is highly likely to do all of these (possible each more than once) just because these sort of calculations give him/her a kick to do!
So in this respect it could equally be argued that playing on a clock is limiting the strong players from using all the guns in their arsenal and thus handing advantage to the player whose arsenal of skills is less comprehensive.
