Hi Christian:
Bill is a smart guy, but the fellow in question is probably Jeff Ward. There was a test called the Mega Test that was designed to measure extremely high IQs. Per the designer's normalization getting one answer out of 48 was equivalent to scoring 113 on a Stanford-Binet. Those who were supposedly "one in a million" (scoring 44 out of 48, equivalent according to the creator of the test, Ron Hoeflin, to 177+) were eligible for Hoeflin's Mega Society. Dr. Jeff Ward was the secretary of the society.
The highest (self-reported) score I have heard of in backgammon was a 191 on a grade school IQ test given to Peter Wagner. Then again, Peter grew up in Green Bay, and I think they awarded 50 points bonus to any 1st grader who could spell "Lombardi."
Ten years ago Howard Ring was involved in a bet with Alex Lehman and Morris Mossieri over whose IQ was higher: Morris's or Magriel's. Before they were through the bet had grown into several bets, with varying odds, and more than a few players. Howard informed me that Paul, David Wells, Morris, and I (and probably others) would be taking a group IQ test at some future Las Vegas tournament. He died before it happened. Subsequently I spoke to Alex and ... Let me say with all due respect, Alex, while they may use such dubious methods with children (which is how Marilyn Vos Savant earned "the world's highest IQ" as a kid), they do not divide the raw score by one's age to determine the IQ of an adult. (Though if they did I'd bet on Morris against Magriel until he was forty.)
Best,
Jake
