Answering Chiva's Questions

In Response To: My September 7, 2010 E-Mail to Bill Davis (Chiva Tafazzoli)

Chiva asks, "If this letter is addressed to Bill, why is it public? Why not send it off to Bill, wait for his reply, reach an agreement or a result and simply, if at all, post the outcome?"

I am making this letter public because it addresses what Bill did and did not do in the public arena of running his tournament. I am making this letter public in the hope that an open discussion of Bill's tournament direction will eventually lead to better performances by tournament directors.

Chiva asks, "Why not send it off the Bill?" I sent it to Bill and his co-director Amy on September 7, the six-month anniverary of the event. I was very disappointed with Bill's response. I asked Bill if I could post his response on this Web site and he let me know I was not welcome to do so.

I contrast Bill's attitude and response to the attitude and response of those who organized, ran and directed the tournament in Sante Fe in January, 2010.

This year in Sante Fe, a first round match between Ed and Larry took three hours to complete, delaying the tournament's schedule. Neil Kazaross and I finished our quarterfinal match at 12:45 AM. This was unacceptable to Neil and me.

After the Santa Fe staff realized the severe consequences, they apologized and promised that clocks would be mandatory next year. They sent out a questionaire to all participants, requesting feedback so they could do a better job next year.

I will not go into detail, but Bill's response and attitude were not quite the same as the humble attitude and sensitive response from the Santa Fe staff.

I strongly recommend that everyone attend the tournament in Sante Fe in January 2011. Santa Fe is historic, beautiful and unique. I have no doubt that the tournament will be very well run.
