An example of a player that wasn't great by today's standards but should be in the BHOF would be Barclay Cooke. He was often wrong in a big way, but the thought processes were cutting edge for his time.

Also, writers like Danny Kleinman would be on my list, for some insightful analysis (like end games and rules issues), even though he never has been super-strong player.
