I was thinking the really slow match was Larry and Harvey, but upon reading your posting I do believe that was the second match, the one with a clock that was then not restarted.

In any event, in matches where clocks are not mandatory you can make bank on certain players causing disruptive delays to the tournament schedule -- you may as well put a clock on them when they step off the airplane at the tournament city.

In my opinion, and I think I speak for many others, the ONLY legitimate, pro-active, non-discriminatory manner to address the problem of slow play is the MANDATORY use of clocks. Then no one is singled out -- which can raise arguments of objectivity/subjectivity (depending on one's perspective) and/or discrimination. Then other players are not inconvenienced by the prior time transgressions of a slow player. Is it fair that players who happen to be randomly drawn in the same portion of the bracket as a slow player have to wait around hours for matches, have their later matches clocked when other sections of the bracket do not, and perhaps have to play way into the night and/or very early the next morning? Obviously, the answer to that is NO !!

So, the very simple, equitable solution is to make clocks MANDATORY. I see zero downside. Those objecting to clocks typically have not played with clocks. I think they will quickly find that for the vast majority of players the clocks are totaly inconsequential. I've never gotten close to a time problem. Some that have little time left at the end of matches do so by design -- note UBK and MCG, Stick to a lesser degree. The other matches I've seen time out, or come close to doing so, fall into two basic categories -- known slow players and very good, deliberate players who occasionally zone out over several difficult plays and completely forget about the time.

Other scenarios are when a match is unexpectedly extended by some freak save after the apparent winner has expended most of his/her time in getting to the near win. But this is a time management problem and, as such occurrences are always possible, should be planned for in watching their clock and pacing themselves accordingly.
